British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels down to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."
During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
